Meet new people in Colmar, the town of Bartholdi

Colmar is more than a pretty postcard: it is also a town of art and history, birthplace of the sculptor of the Statue of Liberty and gateway to the Alsace Wine Route. Plenty to fuel conversations for two.

Façades that get people talking

To break the ice, try a little game of spotting in front of the Maison des Têtes, a mansion from 1609 whose façade is decorated with more than a hundred carved faces and masks: who can find the strangest one? Nearby, the Maison Pfister, with its turret and painted wooden galleries, is one of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture in Alsace. On Place de l’Ancienne-Douane, the Koïfhus, built in 1480, recalls the town’s merchant wealth, while the Saint-Martin collegiate church watches over the historic heart.

Museums and a great sculptor

Rainy day? The Unterlinden Museum, housed in a former convent, holds the famous Isenheim Altarpiece, a work that rarely leaves anyone indifferent and invites you to share your impressions. The Bartholdi Museum, in the sculptor’s birthplace, displays models and drawings of the Statue of Liberty. And at the northern entrance to the town, a replica of the famous statue, erected in 2004 in tribute to the artist, greets visitors: a fun backdrop for a souvenir photo together.

Along the wine route

Colmar likes to call itself the capital of Alsace wines. For a more rural date, set off to explore the neighbouring wine villages, between hillside vineyards and family cellars, and finish with a tasting of riesling or gewurztraminer. On Lyad, members from Colmar swap ideas for outings and favourite places, a great way to find someone who shares your tastes, in every sense.
